Echo of Precision — Part 3
Continuing from Part 2. The mountains had gone completely silent. Hannah had just made the shot nobody believed possible. But while everyone stared at the impossible hit, one of the judges was staring at something else entirely — her rifle.
The Judge Recognized Her Father's Rifle
The mountains had gone completely silent.
Moments earlier, Hannah Mercer had completed the shot nobody had managed to achieve in years — splitting a tiny apple placed hundreds of meters away in brutal mountain wind. Even the most experienced competitors on the range stood frozen in disbelief.
But while everyone else focused on the impossible shot...
One of the judges was staring at her rifle.
The old M14 rested quietly on the wooden shooting table, its scratched walnut stock glowing softly under the cold morning light. To most people, it looked outdated. Forgotten. A relic surrounded by modern precision equipment.
To the older judge walking toward it... it looked familiar.
His expression changed the moment he noticed the engraved serial markings carved into the side of the stock.
He stopped instantly.
The other judges continued walking, confused, while he slowly reached out and touched the rifle as if he had just seen a ghost.
Because he remembered that weapon.
Years earlier, during an elite military evaluation held on the exact same mountain range, a soldier named Daniel Mercer had carried that same M14 into the final precision challenge.
Hannah's father.
Official records claimed he had failed the shot.
After that day, his name disappeared from military discussions almost entirely. No awards. No recognition. No stories passed down — except a few fragmented memories Hannah grew up hearing as a child.
But the older judge remembered the truth.
Daniel Mercer had not failed.
He had completed the impossible shot perfectly.
Something happened afterward — something serious enough that the entire event was quietly buried and erased from attention. The details were never spoken about publicly again.
Now, standing in front of Hannah, the judge realized something almost unbelievable:
Without even knowing it...
His daughter had just repeated the exact same legendary shot — years later, with the exact same rifle.
The whispers around the range started growing louder.
Competitors who had mocked her earlier were now watching in complete silence.
Hannah noticed the judge's expression and finally asked the question nobody expected:
"Did you know my father?"
The older man looked at her for several seconds before answering.
"Yes."
Then his face darkened.
"And there's something you were never told."
