She Was Punished for Saving Her Captain

The desert sun burned over the forward operating base as soldiers hauled sandbags across the defensive wall.

Among them was Staff Sergeant Sarah Martinez.

Sweat covered her face.

Dust clung to her uniform.

And every soldier on the base knew she wasn't supposed to be there.

Sarah wore the black Nightshade patch — the symbol of an elite covert American unit built for missions too dangerous and classified for ordinary forces.

People respected Nightshade.

Or at least they used to.

Three weeks earlier, Sarah had been part of a classified operation inside a terrorist compound. The mission was supposed to recover intelligence connected to planned attacks on civilians.

Then everything collapsed.

Gunfire erupted during extraction.

Smoke swallowed the building.

And Captain Eric Morrison — her team leader — was critically wounded.
